Turn on automatic data switching on iPhone

One setting that lets your iPhone move data to SecondBars by itself.

2 min read

Turn it on

  1. 1Open Settings and tap Cellular.
  2. 2Tap Cellular Data.
  3. 3Keep your carrier selected as the data line.
  4. 4Turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching.

What it does

With the setting on, your iPhone uses mobile data from either line depending on coverage and availability. When your carrier has no coverage where you are, data can move to SecondBars without you doing anything.

The phone decides when to switch. It reacts to lost coverage, not to a connection that is merely slow.

Switch by hand

You can always choose the line yourself: Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data, then tap SecondBars. Tap your carrier again to switch back.

If your menus look different

Apple moves and renames settings between iOS versions, and some regions say Mobile Data instead of Cellular. Search Settings for "data switching" if you cannot find it.

Add a second set of bars

Keep your carrier and your number.
